This past week Connections hired Eileen (Lee) Dumont as our new Family Ministry Director! (Insert applause here.)
Our current director, Renee McArthur is stepping down at the end of May to focus on her family- She and Cory are expecting their third child later this summer.

Let’s take this opportunity to thank Renee for her incredible work in establishing our Sunday morning children’s worship and programming.
Let’s pray for Lee as she prepares to continue this vital work for our church.
Let’s support them both, and one another, as our church makes this transition in the next few weeks.

All of May our Family Ministry is encouraging children to collect food donations for the London Food Bank.
We encourage families to make this a part of your worship experience:

Go through your cupboards with your kids and pick some items you can donate.

Look through the weekly fliers for sale items.

Have your kids use some of their own money and go on a special shopping trip.

Bring your donations to worship with you on Sunday May 19 or 26, and makes giving a part of your family worship!

Serve Dinner @ the ARK
If you would like to be on the “short list” of volunteers, that is, the list that gets first dibs at signing up each month,
Write Ida Tigchelaar and give her your contact information.
Next service date is June 5, 6:15-9pm, to help set up for dinner, serve, and clean up.

gives instructions on how the Tabernacle is to be made. The rest of Exodus provides commentary on the actual making of the Tabernacle and the various elements used for worship. A good study bible will have pictures and descriptions of the tent, the ark, the table, the altar, etc. Your group may be interested in looking these over and discussing their meaning.

Worship is CENTRAL:
How can you make worship a central part of your daily life?

Worship is COSTLY:
Why should worship cost us something?

Worship is CEASELESS:
What does it mean to worship without ceasing?

Close with prayer for one another, our church and our community.

What do you remember about the “sex talk”? Who do you think felt more awkward, you or your parent(s)/guardians?

If someone younger asked you for one piece of advice about sex, what would you tell him/her? What would you tell him/her about the purpose of sex?

Do you agree with the concept that sex isn’t just physical? Why or why not? What experiences or evidence do you have that supports the idea that sex is more than physical? What are some consequences of treating sex like any other physical act?

All things are permissible for us, but not all things/choices are helpful. How does this change the conversation about sex?

Paul defines sexual immorality as sex outside of marriage. Do you agree with this definition? In what ways is this standard trivialized in today’s culture?

Read 1 Corinthians 6:18close1 Corinthians 6:18

. How does this view of our bodies affect what we should believe and practice when it comes to sex?

Application:
The bible has the highest possible view of sex: it is a gift from God for our blessing. God’s design for sex is offered as the most helpful way experience this gift. Review the “covenant of sex” and decide if this is a commitment you want to make for yourself, your marriage and your children.

“God, now I know, my body was bought with a price.
My body is not my own, but belongs to Christ.
My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
So I make this covenant to offer my body as a living sacrifice,
holy and pleasing to God.
I repent of past sins.
I will remain chaste in singleness, and faithful in marriage,
and enjoy the gift of sex as you designed it to be enjoy.”

Connections Community Church “Town Hall” Meeting

April 24, 2013, 7pm

You are invited to our second “town hall” meeting at Connections. This is a time for our church to gather together, pray and talk about our mission. Once again we will take time to hear a brief history of our church plant (where we came from), what we’re doing, and where we’re going. It is an opportunity for anyone who has become a part of our church in the past year to learn some of the nuts-n-bolts of how we function. And it will provide everyone a chance to hear from some of our Ministry Leaders, ask questions and even share some thoughts for improving our work as a church.

At last year’s meeting we shared the results in our Connections Needs Assessment. We thought it would be helpful to share some of the developments that have happened in the past year. Many things are still a work in progress, but we think you’ll agree that we are making great strides in advancing the mission of our church.

Delegation: Who is doing the work at Connections?

Every church needs a strategic plan for delegating and equipping Leaders to advance the work of the church. In the first five years of our church we’ve had remarkable stability in several key areas, such as worship, Stewardship, and a number of our Connection Group Leaders. However, in other areas we have seen frequent turnover, due mostly to Leaders moving out of the London area.

Currently, we have leaders for nearly all of our existing teams and ministries. We are especially excited by the growth in our Youth Ministry. Mark Stahle and his team of adult volunteers and their families have been offering consistent programming in a variety of areas: bible study, social events and service opportunities.

However, we are still looking for leadership in what we believe are key ministry areas of Connections. Specifically, a Connection Groups Director, more Connection Group Leaders, Men’s and Women’s Ministry Directors, and an Outreach Coordinator.

Community Outreach: A church for people who aren’t into church?!

Nearly everyone at Connections understands that we are an outreach-oriented church. While we need to develop programs that minister to the needs of the congregation, we are a group of people focused on reaching people outside the church.

In order to highlight this mission we created a theme for the entire 2012/13 program year: Love Your Neighbour (LYN). In the worship program every week we highlight several opportunities and events to actually “love our neighbours.” Many of these put us in partnership with other organizations such as Food For Thought, The London Food Bank, and The Ark Street Mission.

Some outreach we have created ourselves, such as our Diaper Distribution. We have also reached out to our neighbours by inviting them to worship with us. We did this through our mailing campaign in the fall that saw nearly 40,000 postcards sent to homes in the North London area.

Worship Services: It really does start with God

We believe that God is worthy of our worship, that we are made to worship, and without a growing worship service the church’s impact will always be limited. Therefore, creating an inviting, engaging and excellent worship service is one of our highest values. Is the worship service always the “front door” to finding the church? Usually! Nearly everyone we talked with indicated that it was through an invitation to the worship service that they first came to Connections and then got involved.

This past year we moved to the A.B. Lucas Auditorium. This move opened up 800 seats for worship. We hope this communicates very clearly, “Everyone is welcome!” Not only has this opened the possibility to grow our church, but it has dramatically changed the atmosphere of worship. Our volunteers are not longer as rushed. Coffee is now served after worship to foster more conversation and community. The stage now offers the opportunity to add more musicians and elements such as drama.

As a “portable” church we often have difficulties with sound, media and set-up. This is an ongoing area we seek to improve, but find difficult to perfect.

Family Ministry: The growing edge of our church

Perhaps the biggest changes in the past year have been in our Family Ministry. We now have five classrooms for children from birth through grade five. We actually have enough space for the kids of our church, and space to welcome more kids!

Along with this new venue, Renee McArthur and her team introduced the format we’ve wanted from the start: a full hour children’s program. Our younger children (preschool-grade one) now begin their time each week singing age-appropriate worship songs, and they are loving it! Our long range goal is to have age/stage specific worship for all of our children, from birth through grade five. Then, starting in grade six (junior high) all youth will join in the main worship service.

Sermons: We are passionate about good teaching!

Worship series and Sunday sermons continue to be aimed at sharing the gospel with people with little or no church background. Does this mean we go “light” on content? We don’t think so. What it does mean is that there is an intentional avoidance of unfamiliar “church” language, a clear explanation of all biblical language, and an emphasis on the application of biblical truth to everyday life in our culture.

Since the NA we have significantly tweaked our service planning. From the launch we have run worship “series” to encourage consistent attendance, and the opportunity to go deeper into topics. But attendance in worship is very inconsistent. Now we try to create each service as a “stand alone” experience. We still utilize series, but have cut out most “recapping.” We feel this is a better approach for our outreach emphasis as a church. Also, more time has been devoted to the message, 30-40 minutes each week.

Music: We can’t be all things to all people

Nowhere are opinions more voiced and emotions more strongly felt than in music ministry. Music and worship evoke powerful feelings. While we believe that the church is to be “all things to all people,” we are only one church among many in our area. Connections has an eclectic, but thoroughly contemporary style. We have a Worship Leader and utilize a band. We incorporate performance pieces that usually come from pop-music culture.

In the past year we have refined our musical selections. We limit the introduction of new music. We follow a general order that uses music to call us to worship, emphasize a theme for the service, and send us out into the world. Many songs have been eliminated because we feel the wording is confusing to people who did not grow up in the church. The hard truth is that perhaps in worship music selection, more than anywhere else, there really is no pleasing all the people all the time.

Communication: The secret to great relationships

What is the secret to a healthy marriage? Communication, communication and communication! It also applies to healthy churches. Here is what we’ve done to improve our lines of communication: 1) We have completely re-worked the website (thanks to Will Beldman). 2) Our Facebook presence has been upgraded by switching from a Group Page to a Fan Page. All updates to the Facebook Fan page are automatically driven to our Twitter account, and to the News Feed on our website. This means we have a loop of social networking and online presence that is updated several times a day. 3) We continue to use good old fashioned email. An “E-News” message goes out every Monday, and an “E-vite” to the worship service every Friday. 4) Announcements are printed in the Worship Program, and relevant materials are available at our Information Table and online. For example, copies of our proposed 2013 Budget and our 2012 end-of-year Financial Statement.

Because it’s been asked, we want to be clear on several points: we will not list prayer requests in the bulletin, or make mailboxes for members. We do not have a formal membership policy at this time. We do not plan on making a printed church Directory. However, our Facebook Fan Page and Planning Center volunteer data base are basically interactive, online church directories for you to join and use.

This is not to say we will not find ways to pray for our church community, create “ownership” in our congregation, or find ways for our people to connect. That is why we have Connection Groups. Keep reading to find out why…

Connection Groups, Classes and Ministries: How we do relationships

Our church started with Connection Groups. These are home-based groups of people who gather for fellowship, bible study and prayer. These groups provide our primary means for Communication and Congregational Care.

Ministries focus on a particular age/stage of life. Right now we are offering Youth, Women’s and Men’s Ministries programs. Time will tell how these ministries will grow and change in a growing and changing church.

Classes focus on a topic for a pre-determined period of time. This year we ran Financial Peace University and Grace Based Parenting.

Joining a Group, Ministry or Class effectively means joining our church. It tells us you are not just looking to worship God; you are looking to fellowship and associate with our congregation. It is in Groups that people truly get to know one another. It’s where people can talk about and discuss what is happening in the church community, and it is where people can give and receive the best care for one another.

At this point our church is small enough that we do not need a care committee. We have Group leaders and a pastor who is available for more difficult or delicate issues.

Governance: “Elder” Governed, Staff Led, People Powered

Connections is a church plant of the Christian Reformed Churched and is subject to the authority of the CRC and CRC Home Missions. Connections is a registered not-for-profit religious organization. Connections is governed by a board of directors. Functionally, the board serves as the Stewardship Team.

The Stewardship Team is our “pre-elder” board. We do not use the word Elder as Connections is not yet an established Church in the CRC. Stewardship a self-selecting group of men and women committed to growing the church. The team oversees the vision of the church and the resources entrusted to God for the church.

In essence, the Stewardship Team provides leadership. They surround the Staff and other Ministry Leaders with the prayer, encouragement, compensation, support and accountability they need to advance the mission of the church. They deal with the issues that must be dealt with to move the church forward. This means they clean up messes, like the fire in 2011. It means they deal with what is happening right now, like searching for a new Family Ministries Director. And it means they look at what is coming, like the ongoing search for land and a new facility.

Finances: Connections lives within it’s means

We are a self-sustaining congregation. We have a reserve account in case of emergency. We would like to grow the budget (of course) to add staff and do more outreach and evangelism in our community. Financial Updates are given monthly in the worship program. Copies of the Proposed Budget and past financial statements are available at the Information Table and upon request.

This covers most of the major changes and some of the areas of development. If you have any questions please write or call the church anytime, speak to one of the members of our Stewardship Team, and come to the meeting, Wednesday April 23, 7pm at the Ministry Centre. We hope to see you there!

What does it mean that Jesus disciplines those he loves, and have you ever experienced this discipline?

How has Jesus knocked at the door of your life? Were you listening? Were you willing to open?

Who is on the “throne” of your life, you or Jesus? Or, are there areas of your life where you wrestle with giving Jesus kingship?

The people got what they wanted: a king. It turned out to be a disaster. Did you ever get what you wanted, only to find it a disaster?

God intervened to pick “a man after His heart,” David.
George mentioned the “qualities” God is looking for in people, and how he cultivated these qualities in David (adapted from David: A Man of Passion and Destiny by Charles Swindoll):

Spirituality in Solitude

Humility in Obscurity

Integrity in Monotony

Discuss what each of these qualities means, how is has been cultivated in your life, and how you can continue to cultivate them in your faith…

Two closing thoughts for discussion:

It is in the little things, and the lonely things, that we prove ourselves faithful and capable of bigger things;

When God develops our character, He’s not in a hurry.

Reflection
Make sure everyone is aware of events and opportunities happening at Connections- many are listed in the bulletin: we have classes, ministries and other opportunities to help you move forward in your faith!

Discussion
It’s good to be king because kings are autonomous and unaccountable, right? A king doesn’t obey the law; he makes the law. And when the law gets in his way, he breaks it. But there’s a simple lesson that kings never seem to learn: rebellion against God always leads to pain.

To begin take time to read, review and reflect on the text. What stands out? What surprises you? What questions does it raise?

Talk about a time when you watched someone else make a poor choice. Did you try to intervene? What happened?

When we examine the bible and our lives we see that most of the time God doesn’t have to punish us because sin bears its own consequences. How does this change your view of sin? How does it change your view of God?

When have you told yourself you could manage the consequences of your own sin? What was the result? Looking back, in what way did God offer you a way out?
Why is it so difficult for us to bow our knee to God and acknowledge our dependence on him?

If your Group has time discuss more of the life and lessons of Samuel.
Reflection
You belong to God. He loves you. You have to decide whether to humble yourself to him or press on and eventually suffer the consequences of your attempts to be autonomous. God didn’t spare his own Son to gain your salvation. He won’t spare your wealth, health, or marriage to get your attention.

In what area of your life are you trying to maintain autonomy? What can you do this week to repent and make things right with God and others?

“Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
